Turkeyfest 2007!!!

This past weekend was Niki's first day off in a month so Taryn and I were excited to have Mommy home to spend time with us. Every year there is a big festival called Turkeyfest here in Cuero and we had to see what it was all about, http://www.turkeyfest.org/index.shtml. It is a 3-day event starting on Friday and going thru the weekend. There is a festival with all the food, music and rides plus a parade and a Turkey race!!!

Here is Taryn and Mommy getting all settled in for the race and parade!

The Great Gobbler Gallop!!! There is a long standing tradition between Cuero and Worthington, Minnesota about who has the "fastest turkey", so every year they have a 2-part race one heat in each town and the best combined time wins a trophy and bragging rights for the year. Worthington has a similar festival in their town every year called King Turkey Day's.

Here come the Turkey's!!!

On the left is Cuero's turkey, Ruby Begonia and on the right is Paycheck from Worthington. Everyone lines the streets of downtown and they basically let the turkeys go and the teams try to guide them to the finish line a couple of blocks away! This picture was taken right at the very beginning of the race and as you can see Ruby is starting to fly... Well, she flew right out of the race and landed on the second story of a building downtown. Cuero lost this years race, but we will give it another go next year!
Like I said they just let these turkeys go and try to "guide" them to the finish line. We nearly got run over by Paycheck as he decided to run onto the sidewalk! That bird was going nuts there were feathers everywhere! They are wild turkeys after all!

We met another couple with some kiddos and hung with them during the race and parade. Mark and Katrina have a 6-month old girl, Addie, and a son Creighton who was probably 5 or 6 years old! They were really nice people and have been living in Cuero for 3 years. Taryn doing a little flirting with Addie while Mark and I supervise!
Taryn was really into Creighton and his Turkeyfest badge.

This is Abi, Miss Cuero 2007 who just happens to be Taryn's first ever babysitter!!! Some of the parade photos...

This was a really cute group that was doing a dance as they walked with their decorated chairs!
Can't forget the Shriner guys with their little hats and fun cars.
The Cuero Highschool Band
The Gobbler Football Team
Some cheerleaders in a Gobbler Jeep
One of the floats from Freer... If you look close enough you can see a rattlesnake in the cage!

Niki took this picture because she thought this guy was hot! There was a whole contingent of old tractors which was pretty cool. Guess I need to start looking for a tractor!
